The organisation decided it would be useful to obtain an accurate picture of the strengths and development areas for all of its Directors and Senior Managers. Insight was asked to use its expertise in the design and application of bespoke 360 degree assessment questionnaires as a basis for this process.
A feedback report containing the findings was issued to each director prior to an extensive one-to-one feedback session. An Insight Business Psychologist worked with the directors to form a precise picture of their individual strengths and development areas, as well as a global appraisal of the performance of the services they led and managed.
The findings that emerged from the feedback session were set out in an Individual Development Plan that was endorsed by the Chief Executive.
With individual development plans in place, we turned to the functioning of the directors as an integrated unit leading the organisation. A one-day strategy development event and two-day team development event were designed to help the Executive Team to:
- Analyse and enhance team effectiveness
- Improve the productivity of its meetings
- Challenge and support each other to define what ‘world class’ standards would look like in each area of the business (supportive of the venues aspiration to be an ‘iconic’ visitor attraction)
Prior to the workshops, the directors individually completed the Five Dysfunctions of a Team Assessment (FDTA). This assessment method, used internationally with senior teams, integrates individual responses to produce a team report; highlighting the strengths and development areas across a range of hard and soft factors.
In addition, the Directors completed the Jung Type Indicator (JTI) to create a deeper understanding of each person’s team-working style, preferences and de-energisers.
At the workshops, the team was able to identify its strengths and recognise where it needed to secure improvements. The team was enabled to recognise the fundamental distinctions between individual personality types and to learn to harness the strengths that each person could bring to the team. Potential clashes in style and approach were also highlighted and tackled.
Feedback and Outcomes
The workshops were highly-regarded by the participants, indicating that had been very insightful, challenging and supportive.
Client feedback was highly favourable at all stages of our work. WMC highlighted Insight’s support in its successful application for an external award for its leadership and management standards.
Our services were retained by the client to work in a similar way with its Senior Management Team.
The work at both levels played a part in the identification of the need to restructure and streamline Executive, Senior and Middle Management tiers for more effective organisational performance and improvement.
