The Psychology of Uncertainty

'The only certainty is that nothing is certain' said Pliny the Elder. Whilst the world has always been an uncertain place, it seems like the pace of change and uncertainty about the future is the greatest it has ever been.

What impact does this uncertainty have on us as individuals? What makes some people respond positively and others feel doubt and fear? This month's event focuses on how individuals respond to uncertainty and how, as coaches, we can help coachees to understand their responses more effectively.

Insight's Director and Business Psychologist, Pip Gwynn, will lead the session as we attempt to pull together everything we know and have experienced about uncertainty. She will also present research from psychology, philosophy and neuroscience to add to our interpretation and helping us to develop our own model of uncertainty.

Join us for a lively, engaging session! If you are interested in learning and development, organisational change, HR, personal growth or coaching, we would love you to come along and share your ideas and thoughts with us.

Developing a coaching culture changes and shifts the way that people work by focusing on individual growth and development. A strong coaching culture offers support at every level and as a result people become fully engaged and companies can experience growth.

Organisations take different routes to introducing coaching, including developing an internal pool of coaches, training managers to use coaching as a management approach and using external coaches.

We know that one of the biggest challenges faced by internal coaches is the struggle they have engaging their organisations with coaching.

We have invited a panel who have done just that, to answer your questions and offer suggestions to how best embed a coaching culture. We will learn how different organisations have introduced coaching, the challenges they faced, what worked and what didn't. We will share honest opinions and experiences of overcoming obstacles and measuring the impact and benefits of coaching.

Join us for a challenging and exciting debate! If you are interested in learning and development, organisational change, HR, personal growth or coaching, we would love you to come along and share your ideas and thoughts with us.

Using Neuroscience in Coaching

We are proud to announce that Clive Hyland (Author of books “Connect: through Think, Feel, Know” and, most recently, “The Neuro-Edge: People Insights for Leaders and Practitioners”) will lead this session.

For the past twelve years, Clive has been using neuroscientific insights as the central core of his coaching practice. Having previously studied both psychology and sociology he now focuses on neuroscience to bring a fresh and powerful understanding of what it really takes to get the best out of people and organisations.

During this session, Clive will give an overview of critical neuroscientific insights and will explore how these can be used to enrich the coaching experience for both coach and coachee. This will include examining energy patterns within the brain.

‘If you have a brain, you have a bias’

‘We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are’

Unconscious bias is everywhere including in the coaching space. Neuroscientists believe that more than 99% of the decisions we make and the actions we take are outside of conscious awareness. Our mind needs biases in order to be able to function – many are our friend because they provide automatically triggered short-cuts/assumptions that prevent the mind becoming overloaded. However Coaches should build awareness of their biases and the unintended impact that these unconscious drivers of behaviour may have in their coaching practice. In addition, have you ever stopped to consider how your Client’s unconscious biases may also be impacting on their results too? Our unconscious biases (beliefs, values, filters of the unconscious mind, preferences, etc) mean that our minds don’t treat all information equally when it’s being filtered and processed. This ultimately influences our decisions, relationships and actions or in-action as both Coaches and Clients.

As part of this workshop, Laura will also give an introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP); how the wiring of our mind and the way we communicate influence our own actions and the actions of others. An appreciation of NLP will support you in your understanding of unconscious bias.

We’ll cover:

  • Bias: What bias is, how biases can be exacerbated and understand the potential influence that unconscious bias could have in coaching – both for Coaches and Clients
  • The 5 myths of unconscious bias and ways to reduce them
  • How our minds processes information – we’ll explore the NLP Communication Model and how the unconscious mind processes and filters data/information coming in via all our senses (sight, sound etc) – it inherently has and requires bias/pre-existing patterns to function. We’ll explore how our biases can lead to misunderstanding, as well as missing, distorted or generalised information upon which we automatically react/act on or make decisions.
  • Beliefs: explore the impact of your beliefs as a Coach on your Client: our beliefs form a fundamental part of our biases, regardless of if they are conscious or unconscious. Your beliefs will be projected into the coaching relationship, most likely unconsciously. Many Coaching Clients have beliefs that limit them – you’ll learn 2 ways to help clients challenge and change these in order to help them get better results.
  • Rapport: how to effectively challenging unconscious bias in others – feedback is key to increasing someone’s awareness of their unconscious biasand reducing blind spots. In order to bring this into the clients awareness and challenge it, you must have built great rapport in order to increase the chances that the feedback will land well. We’ll learn how to build rapport with anyone, even those we don’t like!

The session is a taste of what NLP can offer coaches. You don’t need any prior knowledge of NLP or unconscious bias, simply come with an attitude of curiosity and a willingness to learn!
